1990 Page Health Care? Bill Passes 220-215

To appease the Blue Dogs and those Dims in Red Districts, a very disingenuous amendment was passed to appease the Pro-Life Dems over the consternation of the Pro-Death Dems.  All know the Anti-Abortion Amendment will be stripped out of the compromise Bill in a NY Second leaving a Pyrhic victory for Nancy Botox.  The Anti-abortion Dems were just flat out used to pass an Agenda.  One hopes the Blue Dogs are pissed enough to know they have been HAD, and used.

No wonder the Public holds Congress in high disgust.   This will change the political landscape in 2010.

  1. They weren’t used. My bet is that they knew it was coming. Pelosi knows the amendment’s gonna get stripped in committee, so she let Dems in conservative districts and the pro-lifers have a free vote to show their constituents while she looks like the bad guy. She’ll save her political capital for the conference report.

For this exercise I’ll go along with ya. But knowing what the game was, and a bill emerges from conference with abortions paid for, how would you vote? Nancy Botox will have to up the ante to buy the vote I suppose?

Right now there are at least three groups of Dems. Left and far Left, Conservative Blue Dogs in Red Districts, and Pro-lifers.

If and when it gets to conference, it will be 2010 and the second session. Congress always plays the first session for the hard stuff and second session for re-election, how will the mood of the country, especially after this weeks election results play in the second session playing games for re-election? I think if it isn’t a done deal before Christmas, it’s dead.

How will a deficit buster with 10+% unemployment play into this with so-so Christmas sales and then a potential promise of higher taxes?

Looking at the roll call, it seems to me like Pelosi did the bare minimum amount of whipping. Remember that during 2010, a lot of these guys are going to be in tough reelection battles that will require a lot of help from the DNCC. Pelosi can use the vote as a precondition for receiving campaign funds, which will probably swing some of the Dems in slightly conservative districts. Not to mention she can make noise about primary challengers. 15 Dems hail from districts that are R+10 or more – she’ll let them go. They’re too valuable as candidates. But with youngsters like Massa, Nye, Altmire, Shuler, Kissell, and Adler, she has lots of levers to pull…

But knowing what the game was, and a bill emerges from conference with abortions paid for, how would you vote?

I don’t think that’ll matter much. The point of the Stupak amendment was to give conservadems plausible deniability – to allow them to go back to their constituents and say “look, I tried to restrict abortions, but Pelosi took it out in conference and we needed to pass something.” The people who reject that aren’t generally people who would vote Democratic anyway.

I would agree about 15ish% with ya, but let’s get a few other opinions. My overall feeling is if BO keeps sinking in the polls, and Congress is headed with him, it’s up for grabs, but let’s see the others. We’ll just go back and forth plowing the same ground and I passed a few fields today with freshly spread manure :-) .

  5. Jeff:
Hey, at least the manure that’s spread here doesn’t smell as bad…

I dunno Jeff, there have been a few stinkbombs hurled here at times. :-) 1
