My Daughter Is Safe
Those of you who have followed my blog or my commentary elsewhere know my daughter is in the US Army (search “my daughter” in the (TBD) sidebar search-box). She is stationed at Fort Hood, where a Muslim psychiatrist (MJR Hasan) went on a shooting rampage, killing 12 and wounding 31. My daughter is safe and Fort Hood is on lock-down.

I am glad to hear that, John.

But, so sad what happened to others. It saddens me more that the Muslims will be more stereo-typed as all being violent. Or that they all have that agenda. Because they don’t overall.
6 November 2009, 2:33 amJohn Hitchcock:
There’s where you and I will agree with a 95 percent accuracy. Not all are violent; very likely most are not. Not all have that agenda, but the ratio from the previous statement has shrunk. And the “overall” portion needs some qualifiers before I sign on to it fully. But, in general and to a high degree, I agree with you on that.

Glad she’s safe, John! I’m sure you were on pins and needles waiting for the word.

That’s good news John!
We must renew our focus on non-violent solutions to our differences.

I’m glad she is safe. If it were a Christian psychiatrist would you have noted that? Roman Catholic? Jewish? Mormon?
It wasn’t a Muslim. It was a Major in the Army. You left that part out

So glad to hear she is safe in the midst of the evil that swept Ft. Hood yesterday. I feel a kinship between our kids because my son did his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, and even though he’s currently deployed to Iraq, stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY, we hope to get him transferred to Ft. Hood in the near future. So every time I read your blog postings about your soldier, I think of mine as well. I really appreciate your blog, and thank God she is ok!

As for whether something would have been made of it had he been Catholic or Jewish or atheist, it certainly would have been somewhere!
Right now, there’s a lot of contradictory information out there; about the only thing we can say for certain at the moment is that he was nuts.

Scary stuff. Glad she’s safe.

Glad for you. It must have been awful to hear about that.
6 November 2009, 11:54 amJohn Hitchcock:
Nangleator, I was “all good” for most of my shift. My daughter has been on what Army personnel euphemistically call “dead man’s profile” (not sure if that’s ironic or what, but this stuff brings that stuff to the front of my mind) because she is pregnant. That means she’s pretty much useless to the Army right now and doesn’t do much of anything and isn’t found around much of the military activity-type stuff. So, I knew she was safe because she was outside the “go to the field, be around weapons” category.
Then at my last break last night, I found out it happened in a medical or medical-related facility. And, while nobody could tell, I suddenly started imagining a US Army vehicle sitting at my house awaiting my arrival home.

uh huh, took the time to spell Muslim, but not the part that is more relevant and i’m sure would go out of your way to notate if it were a victim.
Next time there is a murder, please make sure to point out his/her religion.

we can say for certain he was an AMERICAN SERVING HIS COUNTRY. But some people want to prop up the Muslim part. Nevermind the rest, it doesn’t fit the picture everyone is trying to paint.
6 November 2009, 12:17 pmJohn Hitchcock:
I did not try to hide anything, donviti. I tried to use the military designation for his rank, I’m just like that. Of course, the Army designation for ranks is different from the Corps designation for ranks is different from … and I mistakenly put MJR when I should’ve put MAJ.
This whole idea that I try to hide “more relevant” material for personal gain is hogwash. I am too out-front about things to play that diplomatic game. And the fact I have a “pound of flesh” in this thing, unlike most Americans, means I was thinking about my “pound of flesh” and not about political gain.
Next time, do try to get a clue.

Well, he was an American, no doubt about that: he was born in Virginia, which makes him a natiral born American citizen. Serving his country? Certainly he had, in the past, but yesterday, maybe not so much.
6 November 2009, 12:37 pmJohn Hitchcock:
In what universe is killing your fellow soldiers “serving your country”? He was NOT serving his country (unless you decide his country is somewhere east of here).

Good news John.

I think that’s being too kind. Nuts is a guy in an asylum because he thinks he’s Napoleon. Let’s call this guy what he was - EVIL. He didn’t just “Snap”, clearly this was a premeditated act with a lot of planning that went into it. You don’t kill and injure that many people on a random whim.

I just heard a bit ago the dude fired over 100 rounds. 13 dead, 38 wounded.
