Maryland was called “The Free State” after our great Governor Albert C. Ritchie assured that there would be no State Prohibition Law. The Feds were hampered in enforcement of the Volstead Act and out-of-town mobsters stayed away. Yet there were blue noses in places such as Montgomery County that imposed local option prohibition in certain communities after Prohibition was tossed into the toilet. That county also bans private liquor stores and has civil servant flunkies operating County Stores. Blue Noses and bureaucrats have similar games going in Pennsylvania and Virginia with their crappy State Stores.
The Montgomery County stores are noted for lousy selections and service and generally higher prices than the competition in nearby Maryland Counties and the District of Columbia.
While it is illegal for Maryland residents to buy their booze out of state and bring it home, few get caught and most employ the sentiment expressed in the words of Beadle Bumble: “The Law is a ass”. People ignore stupid laws.
The rationale for the lousy county stores is that they “encourage temperance”. The same flawed reasoning may be used in Pennsylvania and Virginia. There may be some truth in the goal but when there are stores just across the District Line with good prices and great selections, why deal with the County stores? Better to get the lowest prices at a place in business to make a profit while giving superior service and selection.
Who is going to provide the best service? Is it a private, profit-motivated entity that must compete with other firms on the basis of price, selection, and quality or a government virtual monopoly? Where will people go when they have a choice?
Again I bring up the car choices available in East Germany. The proletarians waited months to buy a four-wheeled piece of crap called a Trabant. Lower-level party apparatchiks might go for the fancier Wartburg. The nomenklatura could drive like capitalist oppressors in a BMW, Mercedes or Porsche. Those not privileged to live in a Workers’ Paradise had a better selection, and compared to a Trabant, a VW was a Mercedes.
So should we trust health care to the ObamaSoc gang? How many of the Limousine Liberals and Sailboat Socialists ever drove a Trabant as a symbol of solidarity with the masses? Will Dr. Kevorkian be the model for the Health Care Commissar?
