One of my e-mail friends referred this story to me, noting that the slowing economy and high fuel prices are hurting the legalized prostitution business in Nevada. Apparently, she said, some of the girls are getting laid off.

Nevada’s brothels hit hard times
They’ve been banished to remote stretches of desert, some have been raided, others shut down and one even sold on E-bay. Nevada’s legal brothels have managed to survive through some tough situations. Their latest problem, however, could prove to be too much. According to George Flint, Director of the Nevada Brothel Owners’ Association, revenue for the 25 businesses in his membership organization is down by as much as 45 percent. The reason: Sex for money may be recession resistant but it’s not recession proof. “Business is in a lower slump than I’ve ever seen it before,” Flint says.
But my favorite paragraph was the last:
- Media exposure certainly has its benefits. Featured in the ongoing HBO reality series, Cathouse, Hof’s Bunny Ranch is going strong. While others brothels saw a slump in revenues, Hof experienced a 30 percent jump in May. But he’s not resting on his laurels. Last week he began offering a recession special: The first 100 customers who show up with their tax rebate checks receive twice the “services” for the price of one. “We always give our customers the most bang for the buck,” he says. “You bring your $600 check in, and we give you the $1,200 George Bush party–three girls and a bottle of champagne.” That’s one way to stimulate the, um, economy.
Hard times, buddy, hard times.

Apparently, some of the girls are getting laid off.
Well done, sir. I approve.
My father always said punsters should be drawn and quoted…
Alas! I must give credit to an e-mail friend for that one. Gail: take a bow!
Dana,
You do appear to have a real conservative side to you which means you probably read quite a lot and I’m not trying to say or even imply that just as many of the people on the left don’t read and keep themselves current,
So with that said, have you ever read moderate conservative, which means a true conservative in my mind, P J O’Rourk’s 1992 book entitled “A Parliment of Whores?” If not the book can still be purchased on Amazon. I suggest you get it and read it. I guarantee there is more than humorous satire in it.
In that 1992 book O’Rourk all but predicted that what is happening in the United States today WOULD happen.
There was one statement he wrote I personally found so profound and utterly easy to grasp I instantly committed it to memory and I quote:
“Any like-minded group, acting in concert, can steal anything they want, and get away with it,”
The sentence becomes especially interesting when you inject the words corrupt, lawmakers and/or corrupt corporate entity or both acting in concerted collusion together into the sentence at the appropriate places. And I don’t know about you Dana but I don’t see much honesty in either our lawmaking bodies, especially our national congress and mega corporations but quite the opposite.
I hear a lot of loud objection coming from the right about the word “regulation” when brought into politics.
Would either you Dana, or any other contributor here like to take a wild or even educated guess as to which entities in the United States have the most regulations imposed and enforced upon them and painted into a ever tighter corner that rules and regulates them to death for all practical purposes?
Tom
