I’ll admit that I’ve been very skeptical that the blogstorm over the Rev Jeremiah Wright, the former pastor of Senator Barack Obama’s hometown church, would really have much of an impact. It has seemed to me that the people who care about this issue were never going to vote for Mr Obama anyway, and the people who want to vote for Mr Obama don’t think that it’s important. Quite frankly, our friends on the left will convolute this into white racism against a black candidate, even though the problem is the Rev Wrighht’s anti-white racism.
But Patterico brought up one rather important point that I hadn’t considered:

Wright’s Stance on Israel Could Cost Obama Jewish Votes
One aspect of Jeremiah Wright’s comments that hasn’t gotten enough scrutiny, in my opinion, is his anti-Israel stance. I’d heard this bit from one of his sermons:
But I think that, in the repeated showings of “God damn America†and “the chickens have come home to roost,†we’ve underemphasized the full extent of Wright’s anti-Israel sentiment — something that could have a serious effect on Jewish Democrats, if they saw Obama’s denunciations of these statements as inadequate.
Wright is, after all, a fellow who wrote:

Recently, while I was analyzing some of the content of the Trinity Church’s bulletins, one thing jumped out at me, from a July 8, 2007 bulletin:
The “state” of Israel? As in, the Rev Wright thinks that Israel is illegitimately constituted? Think that might, along with Barack Hussein Obama’s rather famous middle name, turn off a significant number of otherwise Democratic voters?
Jews constitute the second most loyal Democratic voting bloc, normally giving about ¾ of their votes to Democrats. In the 2004 presidential election, Jews voted for John Kerry by the margin of 74% to 25%, at a time in which white voters in general gave President Bush 58% of their votes. In 2000, with Senator Joe Lieberman on the Democratic ticket, Jews gave 81% of their votes to Al Gore, which was what made Florida so breathtakingly close. Jews made up only 3% of the electorate in 2004, but Jewish votes are mostly concentrated in a few states, primarily New York and Florida. If Mr Obama is the nominee, and Jews desert him on the basis of a perceived antipathy toward Israel, he could actually lose New York, as well as doom any chance he has of winning Florida.
An example: in the New York primary, won by Mrs Clinton 57% to 40%, Jews constituted 16% of the Democratic vote — and they gave 66% of their votes to Mrs Clinton, versus 31% for Mr Obama; Jews already have some concerns about Mr Obama that differ from other white voters.
We still don’t know what impact the Jeremiah Wright connection will have on the voters. I’m still guessing — and guessing is exactly the word I wish to use — that it won’t have much effect at all. But if it does have any effect, Jewish voters could be the demographic amongst which we see it.
Although it “appeared” that BO distanced himself from Wright, it was only his statements. Given the prominent role Wright has played in BO’s life, what role and influence would Wright have in a BO White House? Having this Hate America speaker being any influence on BO is very worrisome.
I couldn’t care less about Wright’s misguided ideas about white people of the present, but I am upset about his views of America.
America is more then a land, it is a collection of ideas on how to make a better place to live. These ideas have been fought for, people have died to give others freedom….not only here but around the world.
America is not here to put everyone on the same economic level, not everyone will be the CEO, President, Doctor, or Lawyer….America was made to give everyone the same freedom to strive for that ideal life, you work hard and be happy with what you can make out of life…getting ahead by pushing others out of the way is not the American way.
Wright, along with everyone else should be happy that they can make a living by doing what they like to do, but I will never agree with his ideas or that Obama chooses to associate with such hatred.
