Call it the “Chicago way.”

Thanks to Karl, I saw this column from Daniel Howes of The Detroit News. Ford was running an ad:

featuring “real people” explaining their decision to buy the Blue Oval, a guy named “Chris” says he “wasn’t going to buy another car that was bailed out by our government,” according the text of the ad, launched in early September.

“I was going to buy from a manufacturer that’s standing on their own: win, lose, or draw. That’s what America is about is taking the chance to succeed and understanding when you fail that you gotta’ pick yourself up and go back to work.”

Sounds reasonable to me, and it reflects my feelings personally. When I bought a new truck in April of 2010, there was no way on God’s earth that I’d have bought a Chevrolet or GMC or Dodge pickup, precisely because they took the bailout; I was going to buy a Ford, period, and never even looked, nor intended to look, at a Government General Motors or Chrysler product. If they had given one to me for free, I’d have sold it, and taken the money and bought a Ford.

Mr Howes continued:

That’s what some of America is about, evidently. Because Ford pulled the ad after individuals inside the White House questioned whether the copy was publicly denigrating the controversial bailout policy CEO Alan Mulally repeatedly supported in the dark days of late 2008, in early ’09 and again when the ad flap arose. And more.

With President Barack Obama tuning his re-election campaign amid dismal economic conditions and simmering antipathy toward his stimulus spending and associated bailouts, the Ford ad carried the makings of a political liability when Team Obama can least afford yet another one. Can’t have that.

The ad, pulled in response to White House questions (and, presumably, carping from rival GM), threatened to rekindle the negative (if accurate) association just when the president wants credit for their positive results (GM and Chrysler are moving forward, making money and selling vehicles) and to distance himself from any public downside of his decision.

And now we have confirmation of Mr Howes’ story, that Ford was pressured by the Obama Administration.

Ford Motor Company faces continuing hardships from its decision to not accept the bailout. According to Mr Howes, Ford’s greater debt load leaves its competitors with better credit ratings, and Ford is not protected by a no strike clause from the United Auto Workers, the way GM and Chrysler are until 2015. On top of those competitive disadvantages, now we have the Obama Administration telling Ford it can’t run an ad which urges people to buy Ford products because Ford didn’t accept the bailout. And since the Obama Administration is penis-in-condom hand-in-glove with the UAW, given that the UAW now owns a significant share of GM, due solely to the bailout, the Administration has the hammer: either Ford agrees to drop the ad, or the UAW can force a strike.

I have a better idea: let’s just dump the thug who is our current President for someone a bit more honorable.

  1. It’s quite interesting that the Chicago Thugs couldn’t force a Principled Individual to corrupt himself, so they tried to throw their corrupt dirt on him. Having failed that, they demoted him and promoted the corrupt thugs over him. Of course, I’m referencing Fast and Furious, a wholly criminal and corrupt Obama Government activity that resulted in multiple murders in more than one country, all for the totally failed attempt to behind-the-scenes cause a public outcry against the Second Amendment, thereby allowing the criminal and corrupt Obama Administration to violate the Second Amendment. That failed disastrously. The only question is when will the Democrats and Mainstream Media (but I repeat myself) cut their losses and castigate the totally corrupt and criminal Obama Administration and declare they are not representative of the Democrat Party? Because the longer the Democrats and Mainstream Media (but I repeat myself) cover for the corrupt and criminal Obama Administration, the worse it will be for the Democrats and Mainstream Media (redundancy alert repeated) in the end, as the public will Watergate-style put the blame squarely on Democrats and Mainstream Media (Redundant Department of Redundancy) instead of merely on the corrupt and criminal “Chicago Thug” Obama Administration.

  2. DP Writ
If the Obama Administration told me that 2+2=4, I’d check their math.

I’d ask them to define what 2 and 4 mean in precise terms, write it down, and notarize it.

  3. Some item within the general parameters of “2″ (that being it’s a number), when added to another item within the general parameters of “2″ (that being it’s a number), provides the result of a tertiary item which falls within the general parameters of “4″ (that being it’s a number), therefore; by definition provided herein and not forthwith challenged, “2″ + “2″ = “4″.

  4. “If the Obama Administration told me that 2+2=4, I’d check their math.”

Would that mean 2 created and 2 saved equals 4?

  5. On another thread entirely, the Perpetually Baffled jh writes:

And of course the Ly1ng Socialist from New Zealand, who has on multiple occasions been shown that his hateful, dishonest accusations of others ly1ng to be wholly made up on his part, has to chime in to troll the comment section with more of his l1es instead of focusing in on the issue at hand.

Where are those mobile weapons labs?

    There you go – proof you’re a l1ar.

  6. New Zealand Socialist, why don’t you take your stupid game elsewhere? You will never convince right-minded people of any of your stupid stuff. All your trollery does is drag down every place you troll, to include the already dragged down Leftist sites you troll. But at least the Leftist propaganda sites you troll (hello, Amanda Marcotte) occasionally give you value. You won’t find value here among the able-minded folk.

  7. New Zealand Socialist, why don’t you take your stupid game elsewhere?

Why don’t you admit you l1ed when you claimed that the US had seized mobile weapons labs, and continued to claim that when presented with evidence otherwise?

    Own up – you l1ed. You are a l1ar.

  8. The Phoenician wrote:

BTW – congratulations, w1ngnuts, you got your wish.

You’re now living in a police state.

No, Phoe, were trying to prevent this from becoming a police state! We are trying to prevent the government from telling us that we have to buy health insurance (something you support), we’re trying to prevent the government from telling us what cars we have to drive, what light bulbs we have to use, that we must support people who won’t support themselves, that we must have federal involvement — and increasing control — over local items like schools, and that we should run our economy into the ground by borrowing so much money that we put ourselves into thrall to China. These are all things you support, and we oppose.

You and those who share your general philosophy would use the power of government to remake society, into something you think better, and would use the police power of the state to compel; those are the things we resist.

  9. No, Phoe, were trying to prevent this from becoming a police state!

    Bullsh1t.

You have been a long-time apologist for torture and the use of arbitrary State power on foreigners – did you really think that such tactics wouldn’t come home to roost?

Your empire is crumbling, and your country is degenerating into a bana republic as your elites loot everything they can, the vast majority of you suffer from economic stagnation, and useful 1diots such as yourself act as apologists for the looting. And a vital part of that is policing – it is inherent in the rich getting richer and teh middle class getting poorer that hired thugs get used to keep dissent down.

Get used to cops beating people up Dana. You’ve been cheering it on overseas and for people browner than you, and now it’s become a permanent part of your country. Just do whatever the nice policeman tells you to do and you won’t get hurt. Probably.

  10. To repeat that, Dana – you have spent years on this blog justifying the State using force on “bad guys” without the rule of law stopping them.

Well, guess what – “the bad guys” now include the American people if they start complaining about their country falling apart while the rich gorge themselves on what’s left. “The bad guys” will include you, and when the cops start hitting you with nightsticks, no-one is going to say a word because of people like you cheering on the death of the rule of law.

  11. Oh, and I should have added that it’s conservatives who are fighting for the absolute freedom of speech, and for the right to keep and bear arms, while it’s our friends on the left who want to restrict those rights.

  12. “Oh, and I should have added that it’s conservatives who are fighting for the absolute freedom of speech, and for the right to keep and bear arms, while it’s our friends on the left who want to restrict those rights.”

Right, the absolutist speaks, and a hypocrite as well! Your principles are undergoing a slow but sure deterioration, Dana!

How can you speak of absolute freedom of speech when you allow Hitchcock to delete posts he does not like on your very own blog? What a phoney!!!

And on the right to keep and bear arms, the NRA has been winning that battle hands on. Pretty soon someone will shoot a bunker buster into a Planned Parenthood Facility because, hell, they perform abortions, so we might as well blow the providers to smithereens.

This is the kind of hypocritical double-talk being issued by the Right these days, Dana is right in there with the best of these jerks!

  13. Nahhh, a bunker buster would be way, way, way overkill! An incendiary device — perhaps we could use the Phoenician? — would be far more cost-effective.

  14. “Phoe, you really need to take your meds today!”

Instead of debating PiaToR’s points, we on the other side either get this or vicious, hateful personal attacks. But you encourage this behavior with your double standards, Dana.

And then you wonder why your blog is going downhill. It is quite obvious to alert guests, but not to you folks who are so steeped with your ideology that reason and good sense have been lost by the wayside. Is there a medication that will treat cloudy minds?

  15. “How can you speak of absolute freedom of speech when you allow Hitchcock to delete posts he does not like on your very own blog?”

First off Perry, freedom of speech regards what the government can restrict, not what Dana can restrict or allow on, as you noted his “very own blog”. For example, if I had a restaurant and some patron came in shouting profanities, being agressive toward other patrons, calling them names and creating a hostile and uncomfortable environment for everyone, I’d toss him out on his ear ( it’s happened ), regardless of “his freedom of speech”. We are Dana’s patrons on Dana’s blog and if he or his “manager” deems any of us to be bringing a negative or disruptive element to his blog he can cut them off.

Part of running a blog, just as running a restaurant, includes “managing” it. If you don’t like the way he manages it just as if you didn’t like the management of my restaurant, you are free to blog or eat elsewhere. You’re also free to start and manage your own blog or your own restaurant. That is freedom, Perry.

  16. How can you speak of absolute freedom of speech when you allow Hitchcock to delete posts he does not like on your very own blog? What a phoney!!!

Right. And he allows Phoeny to spew his garbage day in and day out why …??

You’ve demonstrated ad nauseum, Fossil, you haven’t the slightest knowledge of what “free speech” means. Just like you haven’t the morality to discuss the mid-east.

Instead of debating PiaToR’s points, we on the other side either get this or vicious, hateful personal attacks. But you encourage this behavior with your double standards, Dana.

I’d ask why Perry never calls out Phoe for his vicious, hateful personal attacks, but it’s futile. Perry is the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever encountered, and the scary thing is he doesn’t even come close to realizing it. I mean, there he is, right there above saying to Dana “Dana is right in there with the best of these jerks!” But it’s only those of us on the right that are “hateful.”

I really wonder how you function, Perry. Then again, maybe you actually don’t. You sure give us reason to believe that in here on a daily basis.

  17. “That is freedom, Perry.”

I agree with your post, Hoagie, but you missed my point about Dana’s double standard. Dana takes pride in his absolutist practice of free speech, to the point where he permits some really objectionable language and vicious personal attacks of which, as you well know, many are directed at me. That’s fine, I can take it, and I do push back at times.

I am grousing at him for not imposing the same standard on Hitchcock, permitting him to delete posts he does not like on the threads he initiates. Thus, we have a double standard perpetrated by Dana, which is certainly obvious hypocrisy.

    Get it now, Hoagie?

  18. Oh, and I should have added that it’s conservatives who are fighting for the absolute freedom of speech, and for the right to keep and bear arms,

    Uh-huh.

We have a situation where the cops are beating up and pepper spraying lawful protestors and your “answer” is – what – mumbling platitudes about the Second Amendment?

Are you advocating that the Wall Street Protestors start shooting cops, Dana?

    Is that what you’re saying?

I repeat – the US has degenerated into the starts of a police state, and it is authoritarian followers such as yourself who have enabled this.

  19. “Right. And he allows Phoeny to spew his garbage day in and day out why …??”

No, Hube! Obviously your definition of garbage is someonew not agreeing with you. PiaToR’s usually well-documented counter-points often go unchallenged by you folks, because they are that good. If you were honest, you would admit that his debating skills are superior, whether you agree or disagree.

And talk about real garbage, you post a good bit of it when you come on here with your personal attacks laced with your garbage-mouthed language. Must I cite some of the many examples?

“I’d ask why Perry never calls out Phoe for his vicious, hateful personal attacks, but it’s futile.

You sure give us reason to believe that in here on a daily basis.”

And here is another personal attack from Hube, without even tying your remarks in with any particular issue with which you disagree. Thus, regarding this post, you indeed are a jerk. Re Dana, with his double standard on free speech, he is a jerk as well. Now show me where I’ve been a jerk, then we can talk!

And like Hitchcock with the permission of Dana, btw, you, Hube, are known to ban folks with whom you disagree on your blog as well. What a bunch of lilly-livered jerks you hypocritical wingnuts are when you behave like this. Stand up for your principles and political positions like the rest of us, or give it up and retreat some more!

PS: I have called out PiaToR. Ask him. And I note that when Dana asked for civility, he abided by that request, to the letter. Problem was, you and several other wingnuts did not, so what’s the use? The quality of this blog, therefore, has faltered, in my opinion.

  20. “” Is there a medication that will treat cloudy minds?”

    Apparantly Kool-Aide does the trick.”

Hoagie, please pass the Kool-Aide to Dana; he needs a good shot of it today!

For example, was this necessary for Dana to say? “I have a better idea: let’s just dump the thug who is our current President for someone a bit more honorable.”

  21. Another example of what is happening in America:

Diebold voting machines can be hacked by remote control

It could be one of the most disturbing e-voting machine hacks to date.

Voting machines used by as many as a quarter of American voters heading to the polls in 2012 can be hacked with just $10.50 in parts and an 8th grade science education, according to computer science and security experts at the Vulnerability Assessment Team at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. The experts say the newly developed hack could change voting results while leaving absolutely no trace of the manipulation behind.
    [...]
Indeed, the Argonne team’s attack required no modification, reprogramming, or even knowledge, of the voting machine’s proprietary source code. It was carried out by inserting a piece of inexpensive “alien electronics” into the machine.
    [...]
In what Warner describes as “probably the most relevant attack for vote tampering,” the intruder would allow the voter to make his or her selections. But when the voter actually attempts to push the Vote Now button, which records the voter’s final selections to the system’s memory card, he says, “we will simply intercept that attempt … change a few of the votes,” and the changed votes would then be registered in the machine.

“In order to do this,” Warner explains, “we blank the screen temporarily so that the voter doesn’t see that there’s some revoting going on prior to the final registration of the votes.”

Dana has already expressed his contempt for the idea of democracy, so I;m sure he’ll be thrilled by this type of news. And w1ngnuts are longing for a dictatorship anyway.

  22. No, Hube! Obviously your definition of garbage is someonew not agreeing with you.

Hey Hypocrite — and this differs from you how …?

PiaToR’s usually well-documented counter-points often go unchallenged by you folks, because they are that good.

LOL … only because you agree with him. There’s been more than enough counters to his counters, but I wouldn’t expect you to realize that, because, again, 1) you’re a hypocrite, and 2) you share his views.

If you were honest, you would admit that his debating skills are superior, whether you agree or disagree.

Uh huh. And if you were honest, you would admit that when cornered, Phoeny perpetually moves the goalposts on the topic.

And talk about real garbage, you post a good bit of it when you come on here with your personal attacks laced with your garbage-mouthed language.

You always say this when I point out your hypocrisy. Always. But you always forget (surprise!) that it is not I who is in here day after day complaining about personal attacks and then engaging in it myself — like you do, you massive hypocrite.

And here is another personal attack from Hube, without even tying your remarks in with any particular issue with which you disagree.

And this is different from you how …?

Thus, regarding this post, you indeed are a jerk.

    SEE? Hypocrite!

Now show me where I’ve been a jerk, then we can talk!

Show you? See above. You really are slow, aren’t you?

And like Hitchcock with the permission of Dana, btw, you, Hube, are known to ban folks with whom you disagree on your blog as well. What a bunch of lilly-livered jerks you hypocritical wingnuts are when you behave like this. Stand up for your principles and political positions like the rest of us, or give it up and retreat some more!

Now you’re lying again. I only banned people, like you, because you refused to follow the blog rules, not because I disagreed with you. You know that, but you are a liar. So let’s see — you’re a hypocrite, engage in personal attacks, and a liar. What a “winner” you are, Perry.

And I note that when Dana asked for civility, he abided by that request, to the letter.

Sure he did. How would you know anyway? You can’t remember what you said 5 minutes ago! So stop making us laugh!

  23. Blah blah blah. Copy and paste, Copy and paste, Copy and paste, Copy and paste, Copy and paste, Copy and paste, Copy and paste … talking points, talking points, talking points, talking points, talking points, talking points, talking points, talking points …

  24. Hube’s perpetual cop-out again and again:

“Sure he did. How would you know anyway? You can’t remember what you said 5 minutes ago! So stop making us laugh!”

And now Hube obfuscates some more:

And talk about real garbage, you post a good bit of it when you come on here, almost every time, with your personal attacks laced with your garbage-mouthed language.

You always say this when I point out your hypocrisy. Always. But you always forget (surprise!) that it is not I who is in here day after day complaining about personal attacks and then engaging in it myself — like you do, you massive hypocrite.”

Like I’ve said frequently, Hube, we are all hypocrites. But the garbage-mouthed stuff, you Righties dominate that category, indicating over and over how weak your positions are, otherwise you would not feel the need for the garbage.

And then we have your OCD pathology, another sign of the weakness of your positions. Apparently you have no trust that observers can make up their own minds, and, you always have to get your garbage-mouthed personal attacks into it, like in this post in question. We can count on you for it, Hube, since you have garnered a well earned reputation for it! Why else would you pick on a wrinkled old fossil who has no memory? :)

    Why indeed, Hube?

  25. Like I’ve said frequently, Hube, we are all hypocrites.

Sure. But you outclass us all by light years.

But the garbage-mouthed stuff, you Righties dominate that category, indicating over and over how weak your positions are, otherwise you would not feel the need for the garbage.

Citation please! If that’s really the case, then why do you and Phoney do it so much, then, eh?

And then we have your OCD pathology, another sign of the weakness of your positions.

Better than your Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and basketball-sized prostate, Fossil.

you always have to get your garbage-mouthed personal attacks into itin q, like in this post uestion.

Uh huh — like you calling a Dana a “jerk” after he allows Phoeny to post here at will, not to mention set up your own personal blog for you? Garbage like that, you mean, asshole?

Why else would you pick on a wrinkled old fossil who has no memory?

I don’t “pick” on anything. I refute the everyday bullshit of your positions, not to mention expose your outrageous hypocrisy, moral repugnance, and anti-Semitism.

    Deal with it.

  26. Very original, Mrs. Dewey Decimal!

Uh-huh. Just like the first twenty-dozen times you spewed it out.

Hoist on your own petard, you friggin’ hypocrite.

  27. Actually Pho, you’re the one who starts the shit. Just sayin’. I’d love to banter with you and as Perry says: “You are the best here at debating”. (Don’t know if it’s an actual quote but I think it’s what he meant ) I do like your work, but I hate when you start the.name calling. My eyes are bad now, am dysleckic, am old, perhaps a bit of a dpoe. But I’m trying to be here for you, Dana, york, Hitch, Perry and the rest. I just wanna talk, not argue. After all it is called CSPT, right? I don’t need a bunch of “cites”, I need your opinion, that’s all. Might not agree, but that’s okay with me. How’s that with you?

  28. “Deal with it.”

OK, Hube, I’m done with this childish schoolyard na-na interchange. Let yours be the last word, so we can have adult conversations about the issues we face.

  29. “I have a better idea: let’s just dump the thug who is our current President for someone a bit more honorable.”

Now, back on your topic, Dana, here is what Obama said in early August:

“President Obama served up red meat for his hard-core supporters in Detroit yesterday, proclaiming that the government’s bailout of General Motors and Chrysler to be a success. Had he not intervened and invested in the two companies, Obama said, they would have fallen into liquidation and 1.1 million jobs would have evaporated. In the past year, the auto industry has regained 55,000 of the 334,000 jobs lost, he went on. “The fact that we’re standing in this magnificent factory today is a testament to the decisions we made,” Obama said while visiting Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee plant in Detroit. His comments were aimed clearly at the critics on the other side of the political aisle who opposed the bailout 18 months ago and who still criticize government ownership of GM and Chrysler to this day.”

Here is the opinion of Business Week:

So far, it is tough to argue that the bailout hasn’t worked. GM is in the black, having reported an $865 million profit in the first quarter with black ink looking likely for the rest of the year. GM’s results are strong enough that the company is preparing for an initial public offering that should start selling stock in November. Chrysler is at least making an operating profit, which puts the company in much better shape than most analysts thought it would be a year ago. With much lower costs, both companies should be able to make money going forward. Let’s not forget that GM, Chrysler and cross-town rival Ford cut out 2.9 million cars worth of production capacity during the crisis, according to the Center for Automotive Research. That was a quarter of capacity in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Cutting out the fat has allowed them to post profits even though sales are slow.”

The bailout of GM, for example, means that the Government holds GM bonds which are now worth 80% of the bailout, $53 billion. When GM’s worth $66 billion, 100% of the bailout is recoverable. That’s a pretty good investment, especially considering the 1.1 million jobs saved, and the resultant economic benefits to the people of the great state of Michigan! Who can/would criticize this policy, and for what reason?

Precisely, Hoagie! When I began commenting here regularly, I didn’t know Phoe well enough and actually attempted to have discussions/debates with him. But then even over the most minor of disagreements, he’d always begin with the invective. Not to mention when I actually agreed with him, there wasn’t the slightest bit of acknowledgment. We know why that is now; he’s said here several times that he hates us (right-leaners) merely b/c of who were are.

And where’s our local “gap-bridger” on that? Completely silent, as usual, in his stalwart hypocritical way. How is that “gap-bridging,” Perry — Phoe’s perpetual invective no matter what the topic? No, you chose to focus on his supposed adherence to Dana’s new civility rules, emphasis on “supposed.”

  31. Actually Pho, you’re the one who starts the shit.

Reaaaaaallly? Do please inform us who came up with that “copy and paste” sh1t…

  32. Perry complains:

I am grousing at him for not imposing the same standard on Hitchcock, permitting him to delete posts he does not like on the threads he initiates. Thus, we have a double standard perpetrated by Dana, which is certainly obvious hypocrisy.

I have always allowed all of the other authors complete editorial control of their own threads. It has been suggested to me, by several people, that my failure to exercise editorial control has resulted in this blog going downhill, with particular suggestions to ban the Phoenician as the most obnoxious commenter from the left. When I look at Patterico or Pandagon, much more successful blogs from both the right and the left, and note that both will ban commenters to get too obnoxiously insistent from the opposing viewpoints, I sometimes wonder if they aren’t right.

Well, banning anybody just isn’t my thing, even if it might be more condusive to a more popular blog, so I don’t do it. It’s also true that I am a very thick-skinned individual.

  33. Reaaaaaallly? Do please inform us who came up with that “copy and paste” sh1t…

Actually, Pho, the first time I ever saw it on this blog was when you put it up. Since then, others have responded in kind. Granted, I don’t follow all the threads, especially when I see you and Perry going round and round with your broken-record inanities. But you were the first I saw doing that.

  34. Actually, Pho, the first time I ever saw it on this blog was when you put it up.

Uh-huh. Then again, you are a notorious l1ar.

Where are those mobile weapons labs you still claim the US captured?

  35. *yawn* Dana has on more than one occasion shown me to be the truthful one and you, New Zealand Socialist, to be the dishonest one. You can keep playing your stupid little games all you want, won’t change the fact every reasonable person knows you to be very dishonest and ill-informed in your claims and accusations.
