Sarah Palin Suddenly Electable?

I warned people previously about succumbing to the Abilene Paradox regarding Sarah Palin and electability. Of course, a great many have done just that. But the tables may be turning. A new poll has Sarah Palin trailing Barack Obama by a mere 5 points, with Obama under 50 percent. And she isn’t even a candidate, yet. That same poll has Rick Perry trailing Obama by 9 points, with Obama at 50 percent.

Allahpundit reports:

The Palin fans on Twitter were nudging me to post this before I’d even seen it. Now I understand why. Might be the best poll she’s had since the ’08 election.

After trailing Obama by more than 20 percentage points in polls all year, the new national survey, taken Sept. 13-14, found Palin trailing the president by just 5 points, 49-44 percent. The key reason: She now leads Obama among independents, a sharp turnaround…

By a margin of 49 percent to 36 percent, voters said they definitely plan to vote against Obama, according to the poll. Independents by 53 percent to 28 percent said they definitely plan to vote against him…

Back in March, 1980, another Republican was likewise “unelectable” — until he wasn’t. Steven Hayward has the histo-facts Democrats, mainstream media (but I repeat myself), and the Republican establishment don’t want anyone to know (or remember, for those of us old enough):

Then, as now, the conventional wisdom of the media is that the GOP would surely blow its chance of taking down Carter if it nominated an “extremist” candidate like Reagan. A moderate was the way to go. The media loved John Anderson in 1980, just as they love Jon Huntsman today. Here’s how Time magazine analyzed it in March of 1980:

National opinion polls continue to show Carter leading Reagan by an apparently comfortable margin of about 25%. They also show that more moderate Republicans like Ford would run better against the President. This suggests that Reagan is not the strongest G.O.P. choice for the November election and that he clearly faces an uphill battle. . .

Reagan trailed Carter by 25 points 8 months before the election. And the mainstream media and Democrats and Republican establishment wanted a more squishy Republican candidate to run against Carter, claiming Reagan was unelectable and too extremist. We are still more than 13 months away, and mainstream media and Democrats and Republican establishment want a more squishy Republican candidate to run against Obama, claiming Palin is unelectable and too extremist.

Here is why I believe Sarah Palin’s poll numbers are rising sharply:

On the Democrat side
Barack Obama’s poll numbers are abysmal and falling.
Obama is stridently clinging to Democrat positions which are clearly outside the voters’ positions.
Obama’s “jobs” bill, which was intended solely to paint the Republicans in a bad light, has instead turned Democrats off.
The Solyndra, LightSquared, and Fast and Furious scandals are “coming home to roost.”
Obama’s “AttackWatch” crapola is Godwin’s Law-ing itself.

On the Republican side
Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul are non-starters for the Conservative base. Period.
Michele Bachmann has been rather gaffe-tastic of late.
Rick Perry has crony capitalism, government mandate, illegal immigration issues.

On Sarah Palin herself
As more and more, the announced Republican candidates get vetted, people are finding they have issues, and are taking another look at Palin.
The Democrats and mainstream media (but I repeat myself) and Republican establishment have been going after her tooth and nail, with the Democrats and mainstream media using all manner of smear tactics, since 2008. Their ammo pouch is basically empty.
Absolute nutball fringe Left (Andrew Sullivan, Joe McGinniss, Daily Kos, Keith Olbermann, etc) have been constantly over-playing the “attack Palin” card, and it’s starting to backfire on them.
Joe McGinniss goes so far beyond the pale that even Keith Olbermann has to publicly side with Palin.
Convicted rapist Mike Tyson goes on a screed tying violent rape and Sarah Palin together in a wholly disgusting display — on the radio. And a supposedly sound Conservative blogsite gets in deep water over its inappropriate manner in publicizing it.

As the arguably insane radical fringe Left spew their grotesquely outrageous overreach smears against Palin, it causes a backlash producing the exact opposite of their desires. And the merely fringe Left’s merely extreme overreach smears against Palin has more backlash producing more of the opposite of their desires. And the just plain Left and mainstream media (but I repeat myself) and their regular old overreach in their smear campaigns get more backlash because of all the crazies coming out of the woodwork. It’s a snowball effect. And the power of the media to destroy Palin gets wiped out.

Once people stop paying attention to the rubbish and start supporting Palin, others see the improvement in the polls and give up on their Abilene Paradox and support the candidate that best exemplifies their own positions and Palin’s numbers improve yet again. And the previously unelectable suddenly becomes electable. And she isn’t even a candidate, yet.

Let’s hope the radical Left continues with its overreach until election day, shall we?

  1. Hmmm, McCain was the LSM’s favorite Repub to get the nomination, then dropped him quicker than touching a branding iron by the wrong end. Then Sarah showed up two ways, she was there, and drew bigger crowds than the jet jockey.

  2. Why would Palin run for President when she has sheep like you to continue fleecing?

  3. Sarah Palin -
“So, this is why we must remember that the challenge is not simply to replace Obama in 2012. The real challenge is who and what we will replace him with. It’s not enough to just change up the uniform. If we don’t change the team and the game plan, we won’t save our country..”

Just, “Anyone is better than Obama” is not good enough to save our country. Not even close.

SP has withstood years of vicious vetting, while still effectively getting Obama, and his media, ‘wee – weed up’. We need a real reformer for president. One who doesn’t just say the right things now, but who has already fought Obama as a commonsense, constitutional conservative – even long before it would much help a campaign – and governed as a commonsense, constitutional conservative before that too.

Others can only promise the fortitude Palin has already shown us.

  4. URGENT!!!URGENT!!!!
Have everybody prepare to have Palin Announcement Parties in their local media market. We can have MASSIVE SHOCK AND AWE effect with dozens if not hundreds of these Palin Announcement Parties all across America! No other Presidential campaign in History has done this! Select a location ASAP where people in your area would gather with TVs and get a media list. Fax press releases to the local TV, radio, and newspaper outlet and follow-up with a phone call to make they received the fax. Bring signs, American flags, noise makers, and have a blast! Pass the word to others!
    Join “Organize4Palin.org”!
    GOOD HUNTING!

    Sarah Palin 2012″

Big mistake! You Repubs ought to encourage Jeb Bush to run. Barring that, your best ticket against President Obama would be Romney/Palin. If you choose Rick Perry, you have no chance, because his appeal would be much too limited, no matter who his running mate might be. I’m just trying to help! :)

PS: What did you Righties think of President Obama’s speech at the UN yesterday? Which one of your current candidates do you think could make such a speech?

  6. PS: What did you Righties think of President Obama’s speech at the UN yesterday? Which one of your current candidates do you think could make such a speech?

Who wrote the speech for him? Could Obama give one w/o his ever-present teleprompter?

  7. Obama’s speech? Sorry, I just saw Marine Sgt, Dakota Meyer, recipient of the Medal of Honor on Fox. Compaired to Sgt. Meyer Obambi has balls the size of a mustard seed. “For conspicuous gallantry, above and beyond the call of duty, without regard to life or limb….” You have your heros and I have mine. Sgt. Meyer is mine.

Back in the mid 90′s I was at the Officer’s Club at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. I was visiting my cousin who is a 3 star general in the US Army. I was sitting at the bar (say it ain’t so) with my cousin Eddy and several other officers when a seargent entered the room and announced: “Gentlemen, Medal of Honor recipient on the floor”. In walked a little old man, looked like he was 100. Wearing a suit, with The Medal around his neck. All the officers and myself stood at attention and saluted him. He had the grace to return the salute. He earned The Medal in WWII. At The Bulge.

    Yeah, Obambi’s speech was wonderful.

  8. Hoagie, the level of your disrespect is atrocious! Shame on you!

Hube: They all use teleprompters or notes. What is wrong with that, I ask? Moreover, without a teleprompter, Obama is very effective indeed.

His speech was strongly in support of Israel, yet none of you Righties have it in you to praise this man. That’s on you for your partisan pettiness.

Talk about tiny balls, Hoagie, when did you last check on your own?

  9. Perry, respect is earned. Why would I have respect for a guy who has never earned it? What has Obambi done in his life that I should respect? Just being a lawyer and community organizer does not equate with respect to me.

I just checked my balls and they’re sound as ever. And I still have two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star to prove it! My level of disrespect is not atrocious, it’s on target. You respect Obambi, I respect Sgt. Meyer. I would not expect a liberal like yourself to understand the honor and selflesness that one must have to earn a Medal of Honor. Shame on you.

  10. Moreover, without a teleprompter, Obama is very effective indeed.

Uh huh. And George W. Bush doesn’t mispronounce “nuclear.” You really are a dogmatic extremist.

Furthermore, exactly what proof is there of Obama’s supposed brilliance? He’s never released his grades now, has he?

  11. Talk about tiny balls, Hoagie, when did you last check on your own?

I’m sure it’s easy to see your own, Perry — they’re probably hanging down to your ankles now, considering your highly advanced age.

  12. Hey Hube! easy on the “age” shit. Some of us aren’t as young as you. Nor as tall. So don’t start with the “short” cracks either.

  13. “Hoagie, the level of your disrespect is atrocious! Shame on you!”

That’s an odd statement. I was honoring Sgt. Meyer and somehow you interpreted that as disrespect? You want me to praise Obama because of a speech? Okay, Praise to You, oh wonderful Obambi! Praise to The One. Praise to you and your minions who expect everyone else to pay your way. Praise to The One with the Nobel Peace Prize who took us to war. Praise to Him who dumped my money into the bank accounts of Solyndra, GM, ACORn, SEIU, UAW GE, and all his other “contributors”.

Let me get this straight. After 3 years of bashing Israel the Idiot makes one speech and now I should “praise” him? He’s an empty suit, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!

  14. Perry, today might be a good time to buy gold. It’s 11:20 am and gold is down $77. We could make a lot of money tomorrow. Waddaya think?

  15. Done. I just grabbed 200 ounces at 1735. Now my balls are really on the line. Just show me a $20 upward move and I’m out.

  16. Obama’s speech? Sorry, I just saw Marine Sgt, Dakota Meyer, recipient of the Medal of Honor on Fox. Compaired to Sgt. Meyer Obambi has balls the size of a mustard seed.

Obama isn’t a scared little puke running around screaming about killing people because he’s pissing his pants in fear. Which means his balls are considerably larger than yours.

  17. “Done. I just grabbed 200 ounces at 1735. Now my balls are really on the line. Just show me a $20 upward move and I’m out.”

If you get that $20, that will turn your $347,000 into $416,400 for a net gain of $69,400! In today’s climate, I’d say you will get your $20. Now if you divide this investment by 30, then you are in my typical investment ballpark, per investment in my diverse portfolio.

I already hold gold, but did turn some cash into LT Treasuries, VUSTX, and Vanguard Total Bond Fund, BND, as a hedge against a falling market. Other than that, I’m long with stocks of global corporations having long term good performance plus dividends. I have done well in recent months/this year with Gold, Apple, IBM, and LT Treasuries. But who really knows nowadays what the future will be?

  18. “Let me get this straight. After 3 years of bashing Israel the Idiot makes one speech and now I should “praise” him? He’s an empty suit, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!”

I disagree, Hoagie. The President has been firm with Israel, to the point of being even handed with the two, an approach which I think has been long needed. However, when the crunch came yesterday, Obama stood up alone in defense of Israel, and was thanked by Netanyahu. Yet still he gets nothing but scorn from you people. I really don’t get it.

“Praise to The One with the Nobel Peace Prize who took us to war. Praise to Him who dumped my money into the bank accounts of Solyndra, GM, ACORn, SEIU, UAW GE, and all his other “contributors”. “

You know that we were already at war! We are withdrawing from Iraq, and we escalated in Afghanistan, of which the latter I disapprove.

Re Solyndra, apparently there was fraud; the whole story is not out yet. Re GM, we’ve been paid back, right? And the company is making money and expanding globally, and jobs were created. This is bad, Hoagie? Re GE, ACORN, SEIU, and UAW, I don’t know. You need to furnish citations on these, because I suspect you are wrong.

  19. Re GM, we’ve been paid back, right?

    Wrong.

Re GE, they paid no Federal Taxes and their head is an Obama sycophant.

But I’d like to point out that Perry, per his usual self, couldn’t be bothered with reading the actual article and following any links but had to thread-jack and spew his ignorance all over the place.

Oh, and Perry, this article that I put up yesterday morning already has 61 FaceBook likes. Do you know what that means? That means 61 different FaceBook users liked the article enough to have their FaceBook pages associated with it. That also means more than 61 different people have read this article on this site. That doesn’t even take into account the well over 100 unique hits on this article on my own site. How long does it take you to generate 61 unique hits on your site? Whose opinion has the greater positive impact? Yours or mine? Not like you’d ever be honest about it because you have no respect for Truth or Honesty.

  20. Oh, and Perry, this article that I put up yesterday morning already has 61 FaceBook likes. Do you know what that means?

    There’s at least 61 people who don’t know you’re a l1ar?
